Alibaba (BABA) and other Chinese AI companies, including Moonshot AI, could face US sanctions or export restrictions over allegations they improperly used American AI models to train their own systems, Nikkei Asia reported Thursday.
The US Commerce Department is investigating whether Chinese companies improperly accessed advanced US AI chips, with potential Entity List designations that could restrict access to Nvidia's processors, according to the report.
White House official Michael Kratsios accused Moonshot AI of improperly distilling Anthropic's models, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions remain under consideration, Nikkei reported.
Alibaba and Moonshot did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
