At the time of writing, spot gold was trading near $4,125.10 an ounce, up 1.19%, while spot silver was trading near $59.44, up 1.32% on the session.Gold’s early range was $4,075.90 to $4,142.70, leaving the metal back above the $4,100 area and testing the $4,140 resistance level identified in the latest technical setup. Silver’s early range was $58.61 to $60.11, with the metal holding above the 100-period moving average near $59.23 and testing the $60.76 resistance area.Positioning after the latest significant U.S. economic data remains two-sided, but less bearish for precious metals than it was after last week’s break below $4,000. Softer June CPI and PPI reports reduced pressure for an immediate Fed hike, while retail sales rose 0.2%, initial jobless claims fell to 208,000, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index jumped to 41.4 and consumer sentiment improved to 54.4. That mix has left traders expecting the Fed to hold rates at next week’s meeting, but not pricing a clean dovish pivot for the second half. The 10-year Treasury yield remains near the 4.6% area and DXY is holding around 101, leaving gold supported by short covering and softer inflation data, but still capped by higher-for-longer rate risk.The Strait of Hormuz situation is best characterized as open but heavily stressed transit under active political and military pressure, not a normalized shipping environment. Washington continues to warn that any Iranian attempt to control the strait or collect tolls would threaten the global economy, while Middle East shipping risk has expanded as Houthi threats add pressure around Saudi and Red Sea flows. Brent crude traded above $94 and WTI above $87 in early trade, keeping an energy-risk premium in place. For gold, the impact remains two-sided: geopolitical risk supports defensive demand, but higher oil prices keep inflation risk alive and can limit bullion’s upside through yields and Fed expectations.Traders are watching Fed and ECB communication, follow-through in Treasury yields, U.S. flash PMI data and any new disruption to Hormuz or Red Sea shipping lanes.
