Wesfarmers Gets New Bears Amid Consumer Uncertainty

Dow Jones07-23 08:18

0018 GMT - An uncertain consumer backdrop turns Morgan Stanley analysts bearish on Wesfarmers. Lowering their recommendation on the Australian retail and industrial conglomerate to underweight from equal-weight, the MS analysts tell clients in a note that abroader rerating of consumer discretionary stocks has run ahead of fundamentals and is unlikely to prove durable as housing prices, inflation and interest rates weigh on sentiment. They says that Wesfarmers's discount department-store chain Kmart should benefit from consumers trading down from pricier alternatives, but see potential headwinds for its Bunnings hardware stores from falling house prices. MS raises its target price 0.4% to 79.00 Australian dollars. Shares are down 1.85% at A$88.24. (stuart.condie@wsj.com)
