Huntington Ingalls Industries said its nuclear submarine ship building team was awarded contracts to build Virginia-class and Columbia-class submarines.
The company said the Navy granted $76.6 billion in contract modifications to its Newport News Shipbuilding and to General Dynamics Electric Boat to support the construction and fund shipyard infrastructure. The agreement calls for the construction of five additional Columbia-class ballistic missile and nine additional Virginia-class attack submarines.
Newport News Shipbuilding will build and deliver six module sections per Columbia-class submarine, HII said. Newport News Shipbuilding will also serve as the delivery yard for six of the planned Virginia-class submarines.
To date, Newport News Shipbuilding and to General Dynamics Electric Boat have delivered 26 Virginia-call submarines, HII said.
