Producers of metals, grains and other raw materials rallied as the U.S. dollar weakened in the wake of the Federal Reserve's policy statement.
Fears of a rate hike in the coming months subsided after Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh indicated he would wait to see if rising Treasury yields quelled inflationary pressures without Fed intervention.
Gold futures rose $63.80 per troy ounce, or 1.6%, to $4100.10.
