Trump Pushes to Add Iran Tariffs to Russia Sanctions Bill

MT Newswires Live07-31

Trump wants Congress to add tariffs on Iran to a bipartisan sanctions bill targeting Russia and Iran, CNBC reported Thursday.

The tariffs would have little practical effect since the US imports almost nothing from Iran, but including them could jeopardize the bill's chances of passing, the report said.

Trump said at the White House Wednesday, "I'd like them to add Iran as tariffs, not just as sanctions," adding that tariffs "would make it much stronger."

The US imported just $1.4 million in goods from Iran in 2025, according to the Office of the US Trade Representative, the report said, citing Trading Economics.
