Major Japanese real estate developer Mitsui Fudosan Co. on Monday announced it will establish a center for research and development related to semiconductors to be used for physical AI systems in Kumamoto Prefecture, which is also home to a factory belonging to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).
The center is intended to support the resolution of challenges surrounding physical AI -- AI systems that autonomously control robots and other machines -- through efforts such as joint research involving Japanese and Taiwanese companies and universities.
The Physical AI Semiconductor Technology Center (PASTEC) will be established in the core area of Kumamoto Science Park, an industry-academia-government collaboration hub being developed by Mitsui Fudosan and the Kumamoto prefectural government in Koshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, southern Japan. Construction of the science park is aimed to be complete by 2030.
The center will utilize core area facilities such as a clean room to support technology development and research across the entire physical AI semiconductor supply chain, including components and manufacturing equipment.
Mitsui Fudosan also announced on the same day that the company and the Kumamoto prefectural government had established an organization named Kumamoto Science Park Community & Management (KSCM) to operate and manage the core area, including PASTEC. The organization will host seminars and networking events for companies and organizations setting up operations in the core area. It will also support administrative procedures and human resource development when companies move in.
Also on Monday, KSCM signed partnership agreements with seven Japanese and Taiwanese institutions, including the Hsinchu Science Park Bureau, the Industrial Technology Research Institute and the Kyushu Economic Federation. Hsinchu is the city in Taiwan where TSMC's headquarters is located, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute is Taiwan's largest research institute of its kind. Through these partnerships, they intend to capitalize on their respective areas of expertise to strengthen the foundations of the semiconductor industry.
