In May, soybean oil accounted for more than 39% of the total US low carbon-intensity (CI) feedstock pool, up from 36% the month prior.\nIn 2024 and 2025, soybean oil accounted for 30-35% of the total US feedstock slate, down from record highs of 50-60% between 2020-2022. This was due to a combination of weaker homegrown demand and cheaper imports of low CI feedstocks.\nLooking at other vegetable oils, the EIA data showed the US biofuel sector consumed 293 million lbs of canola oil in May, down by close to 20% from 365 million lbs in April and by 27% from 403 million lbs in March. Canola oil’s market share of the total US feedstock mix slipped to 8% over the month, down from about 10% in April. \nBiofuel producers consumed 605 million lbs of used cooking oil (UCO) in May, rising by 28% on the month to the highest recorded level for that feedstock since October 2024. This represented more than 16% of the total US feedstock slate.\nUS producers used 796 million lbs of tallow in May to make biofuel, up by more than 20% from 660 million lbs in April and accounting for close to 22% of the total feedstock pool in the US, up from around 20% previously.\nThe use of distiller’s corn oil, or DCO, in the production of domestic biofuels stepped lower in May to 457 million lbs, down by 4% on the month from a record high of 477 million lbs in April. DCO represented about 12% of the total feedstocks used in May, down from close to 15% in April.\nIn its July World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report, the USDA maintained that domestic soybean oil demand, particularly from the US biofuel sector, will be strong into 2027. US producers are expected to consume 14.55 billion lbs of soybean oil to make biofuels in 2025/26, before that figure is projected to rise by 22% to an estimated 17.8 billion lbs in 2026/27.\nThe robust low CI feedstock consumption is linked to higher Renewable Volume Obligations, or RVOs, for 2026 and 2027. Under the US Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), oil refiners must blend billions of gallons of biofuel into the US fuel mix or purchase Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) from other blenders or producers each year. \nExpressed in RINs, the biomass-based RVO equates to a requirement of 5.4 billion gallons for 2026 and a mandate of 5.7 billion gallons for 2027.
