InPlay Oil struck a deal to buy a privately held oil-and-gas producer for 54.25 million Canadian dollars (US$38.6 million) in cash, part of its strategy to build a light-oil-focused company.
The definitive agreement to pick up the assets builds on past dealmaking by the energy company, which has completed five acquisitions over the past decade that have helped increase production tenfold and grown total proved plus probable reserves by 13.5 times.
The assets would expand InPlay's position in Alberta, and are currently producing about 1,400 barrels of oil equivalent a day. That would increase InPlay's production to over 20,100 oil-equivalent barrels daily, with light-oil production expected to increase to more than 10,500 barrels a day, it said.
InPlay said the assets generate strong cash flow and free cash flow that would boost its shareholder-return strategy. They would also directly offset the company's existing operations and be supported by company-owned and operated facilities and infrastructure, which should generate about C$2.5 million in annual cost savings, it said.
InPlay said the acquisition is expected to close by the end of August. It will be funded by a draw on the company's C$190 million credit facility, with an expanded borrowing base totalling C$250 million.
