SK Hynix (SKHY) and Samsung Electronics are assessing chipmaking equipment from Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment for possible use at their factories in China, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing three people familiar with the matter.

The chipmakers started testing the Chinese company's etching equipment roughly two years ago amid uncertainty over Chinese imports of US chipmaking tools, two of the sources told the news agency.

The evaluations have yet to result in deployment, Reuters reported.

SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics didn't immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.

SK Hynix shares were down 2.9% in premarket activity.
