ADS Fiscal Q1 2027 Earnings: NDS Helps Drive 20.6% Revenue Growth

TradingKey08-06

Advanced Drainage Systems (NYSE: WMS) reported fiscal Q1 2027 net sales of $1.001 billion, up 20.6% year over year, while diluted EPS from continuing operations increased 22.8% to $2.26. Adjusted EBITDA rose faster than revenue and its margin expanded, although operating and free cash flow declined as receivables and inventory absorbed more cash.

Core financial results

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, organic net sales increased 9.2%, indicating that acquisitions contributed materially to the reported growth rate. Profitability improved as higher volume, favorable price-cost execution, and manufacturing efficiencies outweighed higher transportation costs.

The main quarterly figures were as follows:

MetricFiscal Q1 2027Fiscal Q1 2026YoY change
Net sales$1,001.1 million$829.9 million+20.6%
Gross profit$408.0 million$330.4 million+23.5%

Operating cash flow$260.4 million$275.0 millionAbout -5.3%
Free cash flow$203.2 million$222.4 millionAbout -8.6%

Adjusted EBITDA and free cash flow are non-GAAP measures. Total net income attributable to ADS was $168.5 million, reflecting a $5.7 million net loss from discontinued operations and income attributable to noncontrolling interests.

Business and segment performance

Stormwater produced most of the revenue increase, supported by the NDS acquisition and organic growth in pipe and allied products. Wastewater also expanded, but at a slower rate than Stormwater.

Segment sales and adjusted EBITDA showed the following changes:

Segment metricFiscal Q1 2027Fiscal Q1 2026YoY change
Stormwater external sales$809.4 million$651.5 million+24.2%
Stormwater adjusted EBITDA$273.7 million$203.5 millionAbout +34.5%
Wastewater external sales$191.7 million$178.4 million+7.5%
Wastewater adjusted EBITDA$95.5 million$87.3 millionAbout +9.4%

NDS contributed $94.7 million of Stormwater revenue. Excluding acquisition effects, organic Stormwater sales increased 9.7%, driven by both pipe and allied products. Management attributed favorable volume to non-residential market strength and customer purchases ahead of announced pricing actions.

Profitability, cash flow, and the balance sheet

Gross margin was approximately 40.8%, compared with 39.8% a year earlier. Operating margin improved to about 25.4% from 24.8%, while adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 230 basis points to 35.8%. The acquisition, volume growth, favorable price-cost management, and manufacturing costs supported gross profit, partially offset by higher transportation costs.

SG&A expense increased 25.8% to $130.8 million, primarily because of NDS. It rose to 13.1% of sales from 12.5%, but the higher expense ratio did not prevent overall operating and adjusted EBITDA margin expansion.

Cash conversion moved in the opposite direction from earnings. Operating cash flow declined to $260.4 million and free cash flow fell to $203.2 million. Receivables used $70.2 million of cash, versus $42.1 million a year earlier, while inventory used $19.9 million compared with providing $40.0 million in the prior-year period.

ADS ended the quarter with $162.3 million of cash and total liquidity of $900.9 million. Net debt increased by $54.5 million from March 31 to $1.603 billion, while trailing-12-month leverage was 1.5 times adjusted EBITDA. The company repurchased 1.6 million shares for $228.5 million during the quarter and retained $822.5 million under its existing authorization.

Reported growth outpaced underlying demand as NDS and order timing contributed

The difference between 20.6% reported sales growth and 9.2% organic growth is central to interpreting the quarter. NDS generated $94.7 million of sales, equal to roughly 55% of ADS’s total $171.2 million year-over-year revenue increase.

Order timing provided another benefit. Management said some sales were pulled forward from the second quarter as customers purchased ahead of pricing actions. Combined with management’s continued caution about the overall demand environment, this suggests the first-quarter reported growth rate included meaningful acquisition and timing effects rather than reflecting only a broad acceleration in end-market demand.

Fiscal 2027 guidance

ADS reaffirmed its existing fiscal 2027 financial targets despite the strong first-quarter results. The unchanged outlook is consistent with management’s view that some demand shifted into the first quarter and that broader market conditions remain mixed.

Risks investors should monitor

  • Demand and order timing: Purchases ahead of pricing actions pulled some sales forward from the second quarter, while management said overall demand trends remain similar to the prior year and vary across markets and geographies.
  • Transportation and material costs: Higher transportation costs partially offset gross profit growth. The company’s ability to maintain favorable price-cost performance remains important to margins.
  • NDS contribution and integration: NDS supplied a meaningful portion of quarterly growth and increased SG&A expense. Realizing the expected benefits of the acquisition remains relevant to future Stormwater and allied-product performance.
  • Cash conversion and capital allocation: Operating and free cash flow declined despite higher earnings, while net debt increased following $228.5 million of share repurchases. Working-capital movements will be an important measure of cash conversion in coming quarters.

Summary

ADS’s fiscal first quarter combined double-digit organic growth with a significant contribution from NDS, lifting revenue and expanding adjusted EBITDA margin. Favorable volume and price-cost execution outweighed transportation and SG&A pressure, but cash flow declined and some second-quarter demand was pulled forward. The main issues to watch are underlying demand after the pricing-related order shift, continued NDS execution, working-capital conversion, and delivery against the reaffirmed fiscal 2027 outlook.
