US to Block Tungsten Scrap, Battery Waste Exports to Boost Critical Minerals Supply

The US Commerce Department will block exports of tungsten scrap and lithium-ion battery waste, known as black mass, beginning Aug. 27 as part of efforts to strengthen domestic recycling and critical minerals production, Reuters reported Thursday.

The restrictions, which will remain in effect for one year, follow President Donald Trump's executive order last week authorizing limits on exports of scrap containing critical minerals to China and other countries, Reuters reported.

The Commerce Department said waivers would be granted only in cases of "undue hardship" or "irreparable harm," while critical minerals policy group SAFE welcomed the move, saying it supports recycling of recoverable materials, Reuters reported.
