The wood sector operates through a highly structured logistics network, with significant container volumes shipped to the United States each month,” de Araujo said.\n“While it is difficult to estimate precisely what proportion of cargo currently in transit will be affected, a substantial share of shipments already on the water will likely be subject to the tariffs, creating considerable logistical challenges,” he added.\nWhile duties of 10% to 12.5% have been broadly applied across global markets, the additional 25% tariff on Brazilian goods raises the total duty burden to as much as 37.5%. The wood products sector is among the most affected industries, with one industry association source estimating that nearly 90% of the sector’s exports are exposed to the tariffs.\nComparing the newly imposed measures with those introduced in 2025, Fastmarkets economist Emerson Paradee said US imports of Brazilian plywood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) declined by nearly two-thirds between August 2025 and February 2026 compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. Shipments of mouldings fell by more than 80% over the same timeframe.\n“The impact may not be quite as severe, given that market participants have experienced similar measures before, but the tariffs are being introduced at a time when demand for wood products remains relatively weak,” Paradee said.\nMoneycorp Bank foreign trade specialist Murilo Freymuller told Fastmarkets that exchange-rate volatility is adding further uncertainty to the market environment. He said there had already been a noticeable shift in trading activity as companies adopt a more cautious approach to commercial decisions.\nSources also told Fastmarkets that maintaining established business relationships in the current environment will require a combination of cost-sharing arrangements and operational adjustments as exporters seek to preserve their position in the US market.\nAccording to one market participant, some US buyers had demonstrated willingness to absorb part of the additional costs rather than replace long-established suppliers. Nevertheless, Brazilian producers are reassessing their commercial strategies and production plans as they seek to limit potential losses in market share to regional competitors, including Chile and Uruguay.\n“Brazilian softwood moulding prices will likely need to decline by approximately $25-30 per thousand board feet over the next three weeks to remain competitive,” one Brazilian exporter said.\nThe Brazilian exporter added that output in the moulding and millwork segment has already fallen by around 50% since the first wave of tariffs was announced in 2025.
