Sony Group (TYO:6758) plans to launch a 1 trillion-yen joint venture with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing or TSMC (TPE:2330) to produce next-generation image-sensor semiconductors in Japan, Nikkei reported Monday.

The Japanese technology company is expected to own about 60% of the new joint venture, with TSMC holding the remaining 40%, while mass production in Kumamoto Prefecture is targeted as early as 2029, the report said.

The joint venture is expected to supply high-performance camera sensors to Apple for iPhones.

Sony Group and TSMC did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires.
