Norsk Hydro said it has temporarily cut alumina production in Brazil by 50% due to gas shortages.

The Norwegian company said the production cut, coupled with buying more expensive gas on the open market, could result in a potential hit of $75 million to $100 million in the third quarter.

Norsk's Alunorte refinery in Barcarena will ramp up to full production as soon as the gas supply normalizes, the company said.

The refinery is supplied by Celba, which informed the company that it is facing supply disruptions. Celba, which is owned by New Fortress Energy, is seeking alternative sources of gas, Norsk said. New Fortress Energy wasn't immediately available for comment.

Alunorte is one of the world's largest alumina refineries outside of China and has a capacity of 6.3 million metric tons a year, according to Norsk. The company produced 6.1 million tons of alumina in 2025.
