Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) and Sony Semiconductor Solutions, a subsidiary of Sony Group (SONY), said Tuesday that they agreed to establish a joint venture in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, to develop and manufacture advanced image sensors for smartphones, with volume production expected to begin in 2029.

Sony will be the controlling shareholder, with plans to contribute about 465 billion yen ($2.92 billion) through cash and asset transfers, while TSMC will contribute about 282 billion yen in cash, they said.

The venture will leverage Sony's image sensor technology and TSMC's advanced manufacturing capabilities, they added.

The deal remains subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions, the companies said.
