Market Chatter: Diageo Warned by Indian Regulator Over Misleading Whisky Aging Claims

MT Newswires Live16:34

Diageo (DEO) received a warning from India's food safety regulator regarding misleading claims that one of its popular whiskies was aged in American oak casks, Reuters reported Saturday, citing a confidential government notice.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India stated that the product consists primarily of unaged spirits and noted that labeling must reflect the youngest spirit in the blend, the news outlet reported.

The warning comes soon after the agency banned sales of select spirits made by Diageo due to artificial flavorings, Reuters reported, citing an FSSAI announcement Sunday.

Diageo and the FSSAI did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
