Singapore Shares Open Lower Despite Broader Asian Gains

MT Newswires08-14

Singapore shares opened lower on Friday, even as most Asian peers saw a positive opening on hopes that the US Federal Reserve will hold back from raising interest rates next month.

The Straits Times Index opened 0.32%, or 18.15 points lower, at 5,701.90.

As global factors such as the Middle East conflict and the interest rates may still take some time, investors are likely to eye local earnings for cues during the on-going season. For example, Genting Singapore (SGX:G13) shares were up over 6% in early trade after it reported a 34% decline in its profit attributable to shareholders during the first half of the year.

Also, Pan United (SGX:P52) shares were up 4% in early trade after posting a 49% rise in profit attributable to equity holders in the first half of 2026.
