Stock Futures Little Changed Ahead of Retail Earnings

Stock futures are little changed on Sunday night, kicking off a fresh week for the stock market and a full schedule of earnings reports from major U.S. retailers.

Walmart and Target will report this week, along with other specialty and general retailers.

Just after 6 p.m. Eastern time, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were flat, as were S&P 500 futures. Nasdaq 100 futures edged up 0.1%.

It is also a new week of unresolved conflict between the U.S. and Iran, after President Donald Trump suggested the U.S. could take over the Strait of Hormuz once the war ends.

Iran's Major General Amir Hatami pushed back on that assertion on Sunday, saying America would regret such a move, according to an English-language social media post by the Islamic Republic News Agency. Hatami said Iran's forces stand ready to dismantle any hostile plot, according to IRNA's post.

Trump said on Friday at a rally in New York that after the U.S. finishes defeating Iran, "I'll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States."

Front Month Brent crude for October delivery gained 5.95%, to $88.52 a barrel on Friday, snapping a two-week losing streak. West Texas Intermediate crude contract for September delivery gained 2.7%, settling at $82.40 a barrel.

The average price of unleaded gasoline was $4.066 a gallon on Sunday, up from $3.943 a gallon last month and $3.143 a year ago, according to AAA.

This week's economic highlights include the Census Bureau's residential construction data, coming out Tuesday, and the release of the minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the week down 0.6%, snapping a two-week winning streak, and posting the largest one-week point and percentage decline since the week ending July 17, according to Dow Jones Market Data. The Dow is still up 11.8% this year.

The S&P 500 Index closed the week up 0.4%, and has gained nearly 374 points and more than 5% over the past three weeks, notching its largest three-week point and percentage gain since the week ending May 1. The S&P 500 is up 13.7% this year.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ended the week up 0.1%, and has risen more than 1753 points and 7% over the past three weeks, posting its largest three-week point and percentage gain since the week ending May 8. The Nasdaq is up 15% year to date.
