Toyota Motor (TYO:7203) plans to introduce self-driving technology in passenger vehicles by 2028, developing its own Level 2++ system that requires minimal driver input, Nikkei Asia reported Friday.
The automaker aims to broaden the technology to more models and push for wider adoption from 2030. For commercial vehicles, it eyes Level 4 autonomous driving by 2030, the report said.
Toyota also plans to equip its e-Palette electric vehicle with Level 4 autonomous driving technology by fiscal 2027. The vehicle debuted in 2025 and can serve as a shuttle bus, according to the report.
Shares of Toyota Motor rose nearly 2% in recent trade.
