Yomiuri: Toyota to Launch AI-Powered 'Level 2++' Autonomous Vehicle Around 2028

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to launch a vehicle equipped with an AI-powered advanced autonomous driving system around 2028, the Japanese automaker announced Thursday.

The vehicle is expected to feature "Level 2++" autonomous driving capabilities that can provide high-level support, such as hands-free driving. Toyota aims to put this system into widespread use, and will begin building it into more models starting in 2030.

Most widely used autonomous driving systems at present offer Level 2 support functions, such as lane-keeping assistance. These capabilities only help the human driver, who is typically expected to take manual control as needed.

Level 3 autonomous driving means human supervision is not required under specific conditions. Toyota believes that it can achieve advanced autonomous driving close to Level 3 by using methods such as AI learning to enhance the capabilities of its driving systems, but as with Level 2, the driver will remain liable in the event of an accident.

Additionally, Toyota plans to step up efforts toward nationwide deployment of Level 4 autonomous driving for commercial vehicles from 2030. At Level 4, a vehicle can fully operate itself with no human involvement under specific conditions.
