Microsoft-Backed OpenAI Bans Russian Accounts Over Covert Influence Campaign

Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI said Tuesday it has banned a cluster of ChatGPT accounts originating in Russia that were linked to a covert online influence campaign aimed at spreading misinformation.

The company said the operation used ChatGPT to generate Russian-language social media posts for platforms including Substack, Telegram, X, Meta's (META) Facebook and LinkedIn, while instructing the AI to conceal linguistic clues about the operators' origins.

The campaign promoted the International Burke Institute, which OpenAI said published copied and misattributed academic work, and created a "sovereignty index" portraying Russia favorably while criticizing Western countries.
