United Plans Biggest International Expansion Yet, with Help from Airbus Jet

United Airlines has made its summer route reveal into an annual event, complete with Easter egg hints dropped on its social media accounts. Among next year's new destinations: Ljubljana, Slovenia; Marseille, France; and Ibiza, Spain, the carrier announced today.

Many of the new cities will be served by the Airbus A321XLR, a single-aisle jet designed for long-haul flying that United said will play an important role in its next phase of international growth.

While U.S. government data shows that international travel has cooled off some this year, airlines say European trips remain in demand despite long immigration lines and higher airfare. United has become especially adept at tapping into new Instagram-friendly locales.

United said its new routes, which also include Valencia, Spain and Okinawa, Japan, are part of the largest international expansion in the carrier's history. Its 10 new international destinations include eight that no other U.S. airline serves, United said.
