Canada Tariffs Impact on CPI to Complicate BOC's Task
Dow Jones01:36
1336 ET - Canada's retaliatory-tariff package on U.S. goods is likely to add about 0.2 percentage points to domestic inflation, which is presently at the top end of the Bank of Canada's target range, according to estimates from Royce Mendes, managing director at Desjardins Capital Markets. Duties ranging from 15% to 50% will be applied to hundreds of US goods, Canada says, effective Sept. 8. Mendes says the duties could raise C$7 billion for Ottawa, should buying patterns remain intact and tariffs stay in place for a year. Mendes says this will leave the BOC is a tough position--navigating slower investment and hiring, and a trade-induced uptick in consumer-goods prices and elevated oil prices.
