Canadian National Railway set a new monthly record for Western Canadian grain shipments in August, continuing the momentum from a record-setting previous crop year.

The Canadian railroad on Thursday said it transported 2.5 million metric tons of grain from Western Canada in the first month of the 2026-2027 crop year. The total surpasses its previous record of 2.34 million metric tons set in August 2020.

Railroads across the country have benefited from a record 2025-2026 crop year, a momentum which has continued into the first month of the new crop year, which runs from August through July 2027.

Earlier on Thursday, rival Canadian Pacific Kansas City also reported record August shipments.
