Trust's trustee-manager, traces his path from operations and investments to steering KIT's evolution to an actively managed infrastructure trust. Despite being the CEO of Keppel Infrastructure Trust’s (KIT) trustee-manager, Kevin Neo's career didn't start in finance. He started in operations, running supply chain optimisation. \"A lot of people, before they look at my career history, they might think that I started off in the investment world,\" he says. “Which is not quite correct.” Following his initial exposure to operations, he subsequently moved to investments, managing a portfolio in Australia, before taking on roles in financial advisory and then subsequently in private equity at a Dubai-headquartered firm. In 2016, he joined the trustee-manager he had advised, first as part of the investment team. He became KIT’s Deputy CEO in 2023, and CEO in October that year.Neo credits his early experience in operations with shaping the way he approaches investments today: not simply as assets to own but as businesses that can be actively managed and improved.Growing beyond steady yieldsFormed in 2015 through a merger of two earlier trusts, KIT initially held what Neo describes as bond-like assets— largely stable, Singapore-based concession assets that offered predictable cash flows and steady yields, but more limited in growth potential.That appealed naturally to investors seeking stable income. But infrastructure as an asset class can offer more than yield. With the right portfolio mix and active management, Neo believes it can also deliver earnings growth and more attractive total returns.In 2019, the trust began shifting towards what it calls an active management model: investing in infrastructure businesses with growth potential to deliver value to unitholders over time.Philippine Coastal Storage and Pipeline Corporation, acquired in 2021 and divested three years later, saw its earnings grow by roughly 80% during KIT’s ownership. City Energy's earnings have nearly doubled since 2021. For Neo, the work does not stop once an investment is made. As chairman of several KIT portfolio companies, he remains closely involved with their management teams on strategy, performance and growth.Buying the right business, however, is only half the equation. The other half is having the right people run it. Depending on the asset or business, that can mean drawing on Keppel's own operating expertise in areas like waste-to-energy, or collaborating with external partners such as Ørsted, the offshore wind operator that KIT works with in Europe. Beyond technical expertise, what Neo looks for are people \"who are willing to go that additional mile for our unitholders\".Investing in essential infrastructureAt the heart of KIT’s portfolio is essential infrastructure.\"Essential infrastructure provides a service or a product that consumers require in their daily lives, or that businesses require in their day-to-day operations, regardless of the economic cycle,\" Neo says.In Singapore, City Energy is the sole provider to supply town gas to homes, as well as commercial and industrial buildings for water heating and cooking day in and day out. In Australia, IXOM supplies chemicals to treat drinking water. The essential nature of these services provides resilience through economic cycles. This resilience, Neo says, was what allowed KIT to hold its distributions steady through Covid and the inflationary period that followed. Recent geopolitical and macroeconomic volatility has provided another test. Neo describes KIT's approach to unforeseen macro events in two words: prepared and nimble. \"For every unforeseen macro event that people may deem to be negative, there's always an opportunity out there that we can avail ourselves to,\" he says.At the same time, what is considered essential infrastructure is also evolving. Neo points to KIT’s 46.7% interest in Global Marine Group (GMG) acquired in November 2025, as its first foray into digital infrastructure. GMG operates a fleet of specialised vessels that install, maintain and repair the subsea cables that carry data across continents.The nature of GMG’s contracts provides a measure of revenue resilience. Customers pay standby fees, with additional revenue generated when vessels are deployed for cable repairs and maintenance.As global data consumption continues to grow, he expects digital infrastructure solutions to become an increasingly important part of the essential infrastructure landscape. From yield to total returnsKIT's manager (known as a trustee-manager) is Keppel Infrastructure Fund Management (KIFM), of which Neo is the CEO, and which solely manages KIT.  The Trust draws on the resources of the wider Keppel ecosystem—engineering expertise, global relationships, deal experience—when it needs them. \"We are able to leverage a larger scale network, which then allows KIT to punch above our weight in the global arena.\"With this combination of dedicated management and access to Keppel’s wider ecosystem, Neo believes KIT should increasingly be viewed by investors through a broader lens.\"Overall, we'd like investors to see KIT as a total returns counter,\" he says. For Neo, sustainable earnings growth is key. As KIT grows its portfolio of assets and businesses and the underlying earnings, that growth can support long-term value creation and, over time, the potential for higher distributions.Neo added that KIT unitholders can keep abreast with the sectors that KIT operates in and the operational performance of its assets, such as availability levels and other relevant reported operating metrics in KIT’s quarterly business updates and results.  These are reflective of the revenue performance and valuation of the KIT portfolio.As for what he's still working on, his answer is less about KIT and more about a habit of mind. \"We cannot have this mindset where we think that we know everything,\" he says. \"We need to always be very mindful of anything that happens, keep ourselves abreast of it, and keep learning new things.\"When asked what he'd want to be remembered for, however, Neo’s answer comes back to KIT. \"Someone who has made a big difference to KIT, who helped to grow KIT, through its transformation from an income-focused model to a more actively managed strategy for both income and growth.\"  About KIT KIT owns essential infrastructure assets and businesses across energy transition, environmental services, distribution & storage, and digital infrastructure segments, valued at approximately S$9.4 billion as at 30 June 2026.  DPU to KIT Unitholders are derived from resilient cashflows from its portfolio which includes City Energy, the sole producer and retailer of piped town gas in Singapore; IXOM, a key local manufacturer and distributor of liquefied chlorine gas for water treatment in Australia, Singapore Water and Waste Assets, which treats more than 35% of Singapore’s municipal incinerable waste and processes more than 20% of Singapore’s water supply.As the largest SGX-listed infrastructure business trust by enterprise value, KIT has achieved total returns of c.13% in the first half of 2026.
