SoftBank (TYO:9434) said it successfully conducted a communications trial with US-based Sceye Inc. using a High Altitude Platform Station in Japanese airspace, according to a Thursday release.
The trials were conducted using Sceye's HAPS launched from New Mexico, which reached Japanese airspace over an area off Cape Muroto in Kochi Prefecture on Aug. 23, marking Japan's first successful stratospheric communications test using HAPS.
The tests were conducted through SoftBank's core network and confirmed stable smartphone voice calls, including emergency calls, text messaging, video streaming, and video calls.
The companies plan to leverage the data and insights to advance HAPS commercialization in Japan in 2027.
