An Amazon.com cargo plane overshot the runway at Miami International Airport and crashed into nearby vehicles before bursting into flames and sending dark clouds of black smoke into the air.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said more than 60 units rushed to the scene and firefighters were working to put out the fire and "assessing patients."
The airport was put into a ground stop at approximately 2 p.m., with all runways and taxiways currently closed.
Video shared on social media showed a crashed plane with the Amazon logo on the tail engulfed in plumes of black smoke.
The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement, adding that it will investigate.
"This is a fast-moving situation and we're still gathering details," Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokesperson, said on X. She said the Amazon Air plane was operated by 21 Air, a North Carolina corporation whose operations center is located in Miami.
"Right now, our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We're doing everything we can to support those affected," she said.
Of about 100 flights inbound to Miami on Sunday afternoon, 84 had been diverted as of around 4 p.m., according to aviation tracking site Flightradar24. "If you're traveling through the area, please expect significant delays and potential cancellations," Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on X.
The Amazon cargo flight departed San Juan and touched down at Miami two hours and 11 minutes later at 1:53 p.m. local time, according to Flightradar 24. Publicly available flight data showed the Boeing 767's speed was 112 knots as it left the usable area of the runway, according to the flight tracker.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it is gathering information about the incident.
