President Donald Trump on September 7 shared on social media a statement from Greg Wischer of the United States Department of the Interior, announcing that the fountains and pools at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, D.C., have been recently rehabilitated after five years of no repairs.
The report states that more than 100,000 gallons of water flow through the seven unique granite fountains and pools at the memorial. The repair work included the fountains’ mechanical systems as well as the surrounding plaza, including large sidewalk pavers. According to Wischer, each fountain—its movement, scale, and sound—represents distinct challenges and achievements of Roosevelt’s four terms. For example, the unorderly blocks in the first photo represent the uneasy stability of the Cold War that followed Roosevelt’s death and post-WWII period.
