Amazon-backed (AMZN) Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the pace of model capability development, arguing that accelerating advances and recent alignment incidents could outpace efforts to ensure AI safety.
Amodei said accelerating recursive self-improvement could amplify AI risks, citing the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident as an example of potential damage from more capable but similarly misaligned systems.
Amodei said more capable systems exhibiting similar misalignment could cause substantially greater damage.
He added that pacing would not halt AI development but would give safety efforts time to keep up, while urging measures to preserve the US lead over China, including tighter chip controls, limits on AI distillation and stronger model-weight security.
South Korea's SK Hynix (SKHY) and Samsung Electronics fell more than 6.8% and 4%, respectively. In Europe, ASML (ASML), Nokia (NOK) and Infineon Technologies also declined, while Nvidia (NVDA), Micron Technology (MU) and Intel (INTC) fell in US premarket trading, CNBC reported Monday.
