Stocks are rising midday Monday as falling oil prices stoke the AI trade.
Here's what is moving markets today:
Oil prices: Brent crude-oil futures are on track for their longest run of losses in about three months, extending their decline to a fourth straight session this morning. Traders are looking ahead to this week's gathering of global leaders in New York for the United Nations General Assembly as a potential catalyst for peace negotiations that could resume the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz.
AI/Tech optimism: Chip stocks, software firms, hyperscalers and shares of companies whose fortunes are tied to cryptocurrencies are all rallying. The PHLX Semiconductor Index is up more than 3%. Falling oil prices and bond yields have bolstered investors' risk appetite.
Trump-Xi summit in focus: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said U.S. officials discussed economics, tariffs and AI with Chinese counterparts in New York yesterday, ahead of President Xi Jinping's visit to the U.S. this week. Bessent said there's a chance that Xi and Trump will see each other two more times following this visit. The countries have committed to constant communication on AI, he added.
