Southern Company Unit Partners With Google to Advance Nuclear Energy Generation in Georgia

Southern Company (SO) unit Georgia Power said late Monday it entered a partnership with Alphabet's (GOOG/GOOGL) Google to advance nuclear energy in the state and provide around $900 million in benefits to customers.

Under the deal, subject to approval by the Georgia Public Service Commission, Google will support uprates on Georgia Power's owned portion of the nuclear units at its Vogtle and Hatch plants for them to add 96 megawatts of new capacity to the grid, according to a statement.

The deal also comprises a new nuclear uprate tariff structure as well as a request to approve a new extended power uprate for the Hatch plant, the company said.

Google will also subscribe to the new NU-1 tariff and receive the zero-emission credits related to the power generated by the nuclear unit uprates, according to a statement.
