Exchange-Traded Funds, Equity Futures up Pre-Bell Friday as Treasury Yields Rise, Oil Prices Fall

The broad market exchange-traded fund SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) was up 0.3%, and the actively traded Invesco QQQ Trust (QQQ) advanced 0.5% in recent Friday premarket activity, as treasury yields increase and oil prices decline.

US stock futures were up, with S&P 500 Index futures up 0.2%, Dow Jones Industrial Average futures gaining 0.3%, and Nasdaq futures rising 0.4% before the start of regular trading.

The final University of Michigan consumer sentiment reading for September is expected at 10:00 am ET.

The Kansas City Federal Reserve's services reading for September is due to be released at 11:00 am ET, followed by updates from the St. Louis and Atlanta Fed's GDP nowcast estimates for Q3 around midday.

Kansas City Fed President Jeffrey Schmid is due to speak at 9:20 am ET.

In premarket action, bitcoin was up by 0.9% in the past 24 hours. Among cryptocurrency ETFs, the cryptocurrency fund ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) was unchanged, Ether ETF (EETH) advanced 0.9%, and Bitcoin & Ether Market Cap Weight ETF (BETH) was flat.

Technology

The State Street Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLK) rose 0.8%, the iShares US Technology ETF (IYW) was 1% higher, and the iShares Expanded Tech Sector ETF (IGM) was up 0.5%. Among semiconductor ETFs, the State Street SPDR S&P Semiconductor ETF (XSD) was inactive, while the iShares Semiconductor ETF (SOXX) rose by 1.4%.

AMD (AMD) shares were up 1.9% in recent premarket activity after rising 2.4% at the previous day's close.

Consumer

The State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) was down 0.3%, the Vanguard Consumer Staples Index Fund ETF Shares (VDC) was up 0.3%, and the iShares US Consumer Staples ETF (IYK) was inactive. The State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) gained 0.4%. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH) and the State Street SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) were inactive.

Toyota Motor (TM) shares were up 1.1% pre-bell after the company was projected to post a 2.2% year-over-year sales increase in the period, Cox Automotive said.

Health Care

The State Street Health Care Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLV) edged up 0.1%, the Vanguard Health Care Index Fund (VHT) was 0.2% higher, while the iShares US Healthcare ETF (IYH) was inactive. The iShares Biotechnology ETF (IBB) was up by 0.4%.

Humana (HUM) shares were up over 3% premarket after the company received an average rating of overweight and a mean price target of $425.46, according to analysts polled by FactSet.

Financial

The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) advanced 0.4%. Direxion Daily Financial Bull 3X Shares (FAS) was up 0.9%, while its bearish counterpart, Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ), was 0.7% lower.

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial (SMFG) shares traded up 3.2% in early-hours activity after its banking unit was reported to be in advanced talks to increase its stake in VPBank, a Vietnamese private lender, Reuters reported, citing four people familiar with the negotiations.

Industrial

The State Street Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI) advanced 0.6%, while the Vanguard Industrials Index Fund (VIS) and the iShares US Industrials ETF (IYJ) were inactive.

Eaton (ETN) shares were up over 1.2% before the opening bell after the company said it signed a deal to acquire COL Group from Oaktree's Power Opportunities strategy for an enterprise value of 810 million euros ($923.1 million).

Energy

The iShares US Energy ETF (IYE) was inactive, while the State Street Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLE) was down by 1.1%.

TotalEnergies (TTE) shares were down 0.9% after the company said its board unanimously backed its plans to propose renewing Chief Executive Patrick Pouyanne's mandate at the May 2027 shareholders' meeting.

Commodities

Front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude oil retreated by 2.1% to $92.64 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Natural gas was down 3.5% to $3.18 per 1 million British Thermal Units. The United States Oil Fund (USO) decreased by 2.6%, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) was 4% lower.

Gold futures for November rose by 0.8% to $4,331.50 an ounce on the Comex. Silver futures gained by 1.7% to $65.10 an ounce. SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) was up by 0.4%, and the iShares Silver Trust (SLV) rose by 0.9%.
