Consumer stocks rose Friday afternoon with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) gaining 0.3% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) adding 0.4%.
In sector news, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the US and China have reached agreements covering certain nonsensitive goods that could be traded on more favorable terms, CNBC reported Friday.
The University of Michigan consumer sentiment index was revised upward to 48.1 for September from 47.8 in the preliminary estimate. That trailed the final reading of 51.7 in August.
In corporate news, Costco Wholesale (COST) reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue in fiscal Q4, though the warehouse chain's comparable sales growth missed market estimates. The shares rose 2.7%.
Tesla (TSLA) is facing challenges scaling production of its Optimus humanoid robot as production lines struggle with the robot's complex hands, supplier constraints and automation equipment, The Information reported. Separately, a European Union vote on authorizing Tesla's full self-driving system has been delayed from October, and the next apparent opportunity for a decision won't occur before December, Reuters reported. Tesla shares fell 1.2%.
Scholastic (SCHL) shares tumbled 8.3% a day after the company reported a fiscal Q1 adjusted loss of $3.63 per diluted share, widening from the loss of $2.52 a year earlier.
Black Rock Coffee Bar (BRCB) is opening new stores in Arizona, California and Texas. The stock rose 0.8%.
