RBA Set to Shift Focus to Global Risks; Sticky Inflation
Dow Jones09-25 08:35
0035 GMT - The Reserve Bank of Australia is set to change focus next week. Three interest rate increases in the first half of the year were focused on correcting excessive easing in 2025. The likely increase in the official cash rate next week will be about global inflation risks, says Paul Bloxham, chief economist at HSBC, Australia. Part of the problem is also that inflation has already been high for an extended period--the trimmed mean has been above the 2.5% midpoint of the target band for 4.5 years, he adds. The RBA's reaction function is shifting, as it becomes less tolerant of high inflation, he says.
