Zealand Pharma (ZEAL) said Thursday that Boehringer Ingelheim's survodutide achieved up to 13.1% average weight loss after 76 weeks in a phase 3 trial of adults with obesity or overweight and type 2 diabetes, compared with 3.1% for placebo.

The trial met its co-primary endpoints, with up to 79.3% of patients receiving survodutide achieving at least 5% weight loss versus 32.7% for placebo, the company said.

Zealand said patients also saw improvements in blood sugar and waist size. Survodutide reduced HbA1c by up to 1.21 percentage points from a 7.4% baseline, compared with a 0.03-point reduction for placebo, and reduced waist circumference by 11.1 centimeters versus 3.5 centimeters, respectively, Zealand Pharma said.

Gastrointestinal adverse events, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, were the most common side effects. Treatment discontinuation due to gastrointestinal events was 18% for survodutide compared with 1.2% for placebo, it said.

Boehringer Ingelheim expects to release results from a separate trial examining survodutide's effects on cardiovascular health later this year.

The drug remains experimental and has not been approved for use, according to Zealand.
