The ex-dividend date is usually set to be one business day before the record date, which is the cut-off date on which you must be present on the company's books as a shareholder in order to receive the dividend. It is important to be aware of the ex-dividend date because any trade on the stock needs to have been settled on or before the record date. Therefore, if you purchase Ingles Markets' shares on or after the 8th of October, you won't be eligible to receive the dividend, when it is paid on the 15th of October. The company's next dividend payment will be US$0.165 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of US$0.66 to shareholders. Looking at the last 12 months of distributions, Ingles Markets has a trailing yield of approximately 0.8% on its current stock price of US$86.65. Dividends are a major contributor to investment returns for long term holders, but only if the dividend continues to be paid. That's why we should always check whether the dividend payments appear sustainable, and if the company is growing. AI is about to change healthcare. Dividends are typically paid from company earnings. If a company pays more in dividends than it earned in profit, then the dividend could be unsustainable. Ingles Markets has a low and conservative payout ratio of just 12% of its income after tax. Yet cash flows are even more important than profits for assessing a dividend, so we need to see if the company generated enough cash to pay its distribution. What's good is that dividends were well covered by free cash flow, with the company paying out 8.2% of its cash flow last year. It's encouraging to see that the dividend is covered by both profit and cash flow. This generally suggests the dividend is sustainable, as long as earnings don't drop precipitously. NasdaqGS:IMKT.A Historic Dividend October 5th 2026 AdvertisementHave Earnings And Dividends Been Growing? When earnings decline, dividend companies become much harder to analyse and own safely. If earnings decline and the company is forced to cut its dividend, investors could watch the value of their investment go up in smoke. Ingles Markets's earnings per share have fallen at approximately 9.1% a year over the previous five years. When earnings per share fall, the maximum amount of dividends that can be paid also falls. The main way most investors will assess a company's dividend prospects is by checking the historical rate of dividend growth. Ingles Markets's dividend payments are effectively flat on where they were 10 years ago. If a company's dividend stays flat while earnings are in decline, this is typically a sign that it is paying out a larger percentage of its earnings. This can become unsustainable if earnings fall far enough. The Bottom Line Should investors buy Ingles Markets for the upcoming dividend? Ingles Markets has comfortably low cash and profit payout ratios, which may mean the dividend is sustainable even in the face of a sharp decline in earnings per share. Still, we consider declining earnings to be a warning sign. To summarise, Ingles Markets looks okay on this analysis, although it doesn't appear a stand-out opportunity. On that note, you'll want to research what risks Ingles Markets is facing. For example - Ingles Markets has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
