Gets me Celebrity Traitors and Blue Lights, after all. Plus the Shipping Forecast to wake up to every morning. I could do with more and better sport on the BBC, though. Instead, both its quantity and quality are in decline.International football breaks are a challenge for ingrained sport-watching habits. Sky’s Sunday afternoon offering suddenly looks skinny without the Premier League, especially when – as last weekend – the Formula 1 Grand Prix starts around breakfast time for European viewers. \n\n\n\nEyes on the BBC, then, no longer home to England football but still with an opportunity to reclaim a piece of the sport-loving nation’s heart.Our public broadcaster’s response? Seeing the score at 0-2 to the Dodgers in the fifth, I couldn’t resist the temptation to check out the final result. And so curiosity killed my ‘live’ experience. (3-5 to the Dodgers, in case you were wondering).\n\n\n\n\nWe’re in a race to not be swiped, up against people selling you holidays, or clothes companies, or two-for-one chicken breasts on sale from the supermarket, or football teams, or athletes.\nAlex Kay-Jelski, BBC Director of Sport, February 2026I’m all for access to live baseball on my various screens. I’m just not sure that the BBC is the rightful home. Its five-year MLB deal ends next year. However little the broadcaster is paying for these TV rights, given the current austerity era within BBC Sport with sports and staff being cut, surely baseball can’t be a priority going forwards. But how can we outsiders second-guess the baffling strategic decisions of leadership seemingly increasingly distant from its public service obligations?Short of mainstream sport-watching options on Sunday, I turned instead to the broadcast platform that is gobbling up traditional telly – and not just in sport. YouTube became my window onto the global sporting world for the day. Well, until my brain scrambled and my iPad’s battery ran down in sympathy.\n\n\n\nAngered by the BBC’s dwindling interest in broadcasting Olympic sport (having abdicated its Paralympic throne long ago ahead of London 2012), the leaders of many British governing bodies have had to take to promoting access to major championships in their sports on YouTube.Their problem is that all promotion comes down to the work of the sports themselves. There is no breadth and depth of awareness on YouTube that comes naturally with a slot on mainstream TV. The Commonwealth Games organisers are maintaining a robust defence of their decision to broadcast Glasgow 2026 on TNT Sports after the BBC apparently showed scant interest with a low bid to match. But the viewing figures on the streamer must have really hurt, especially when compared to the numbers who tuned into athletics’ European Championships on the BBC only a few weeks later.While ‘needs must’ in deploying YouTube is the consequence of lack of interest in many major champs among traditional broadcasters, the platform is also an opportunity for lesser events to seek out an audience. Scroll through YouTube’s chaotic menu – as I did for much of Sunday – and the wacky wonderfulness of sport across the world is laid out before you.So what did I watch?China Smash table tennis in Beijing, both Formula Drift and MotoGP in Japan, women’s KLPGA Tour golf in Korea, the World Triathlon Mixed Relay Cup in Rome, FIBA U18 Women’s Asia Cup basketball in Malaysia, motocross in France, a full roster of WSL and WSL 2 football matches in England plus Poland v Italy in the Nations League and Scotland FC v Bulawayo Chiefs in Zimbabwe’s Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, Pro20 Cup cricket in South Africa, a Kabaddi Cup from Punjab, rugby league’s Championship Grand Final in London, SCCA road motor-racing in Wisconsin, and NFL games in London and the US. Plus F1 with a foreign language commentary I couldn’t quite fathom.","kind":"highlight","is_publish_news":true,"is_publish_highlight":false,"is_publish_live":false,"is_publish_wemedia":false,"editions":null,"column":"","sentiment":"0","news_tag":"","news_rank":0,"isVideo":false,"video":null,"symbols":[],"gpt_button":0,"need_auth":false,"need_login_tip":false,"code":"91000000","status":"200"},"commentList":[],"isCommentEnd":true,"newsSizeData":{"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"favoriteSize":0,"likeStatus":false,"favoriteStatus":false},"APP":{"userAgent":"Mozilla/5.0 AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko; compatible; ClaudeBot/1.0; +claudebot@anthropic.com)","isDev":false,"isTTM":true,"isLaohu8Offline":false,"tenantId":"TBGLOBAL","deviceId":"web-server-community-laohu8-v3","version":"4.52.0","shortVersion":"4.52.0","platform":"web","vendor":"web","appName":"ttm","isIOS":false,"isAndroid":false,"isTiger":false,"isTHS":false,"isWeiXin":false,"isWeiXinMini":false,"isWeiBo":false,"isQQ":false,"isBaiduSwan":false,"isBaiduBox":false,"isDingTalk":false,"isToutiao":false,"isOnePlus":false,"isHuaWei":false,"isXiaomi":false,"isXiaomiWebView":false,"isOppo":false,"isVivo":false,"isSamsung":false,"isMobile":false},"href":"/m/news/2673187025","isCrawlerRequest":true}
