This compared to 7,205 lots on August 31 and 6,472 lots on July 31, reflecting the growing momentum on the contract as lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistries gain traction globally.\n“The recent increase in volatility on the GFEX [Guangzhou Futures Exchange in China] has led to some aggressive selling out of Asia on CME battery contracts this past week. Consumers have been keen to lock in longer-term hedging at these lower levels, with confidence in the contract allowing deals to be concluded out into Cal-28,” Anna Chadwick, head of battery metals at broker FIS, told Fastmarkets.\nIn July, the CME lithium hydroxide contract saw its first trades for 2028 contract months.\n“The increase in open interest across both lithium hydroxide and lithium carbonate contracts highlights the growing maturity of the lithium derivatives market,” Callum Perry, market development manager at Fastmarkets, said. “In particular, rising open interest further out on the forward curve suggests that market participants are increasingly using futures to manage longer-term price exposure, supporting deeper liquidity across the market.”\nTrading volumes\nThe CME lithium hydroxide contract, which launched in 2021 and settles basis Fastmarkets’ CIF China, Japan and South Korea (CJK) price assessment, saw 10,539 tonnes traded in September 2026, up from 9,455 tonnes in the corresponding month in 2025.\nThe contract achieved a record monthly trading volume of 19,590 tonnes in the first month of 2026, compared to 17,013 tonnes in July 2025, the second strongest trading month to date according to CME data.\nTrading volumes on the CME lithium hydroxide contract totaled 81,955 tonnes as of September 30, 2026, on track to match the 124,606 tonnes traded in 2025.\nThe CME lithium carbonate contract, which also settles basis the relevant Fastmarkets’ CIF China, Japan and South Korea (CJK) price assessment, saw 2,734 tonnes traded in September 2026, the second highest monthly volume since the contract launched, behind 4,343 tonnes in April 2026. This was also up sharply from 365 tonnes in the corresponding month in 2025.\nTrading volumes on the CME lithium carbonate contract totaled 17,172 tonnes as of September 30, compared to 14,567 tonnes traded across the whole of 2025.\nForward curves\nThe CME lithium carbonate forward curve remains in a soft near-term backwardation, with the October contract settling at $16.85 per kg on Thursday October 1, and the November contract at $16.40 per kg. The curve then shifts into a steady contango from November 2026 out to July 2027, where it settled at $17.00 per kg.\nThe CME lithium hydroxide forward curve also remains in a soft near-term backwardation, with the October contract settling at $15.50 per kg on Thursday October 1, and the November contract at $15.44 per kg.
