Duke Energy Reaches Settlement Requiring Data Centers To Pay Upfront Grid Connection Costs In N.C.

MT Newswires Live07:44

Duke Energy (DUK) on Wednesday said it has reached a settlement with the North Carolina Public Staff, Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft and other stakeholders that would require data centers and other large-load customers to pay upfront for the costs of connecting to the grid, shielding existing customers.

Under the agreement, large-load customers would make nonrefundable upfront payments for facilities serving only them, such as substations, and provide deposits and security guarantees for upgrades that serve all customers, the company said.

They would also take service under a separate High Load Factor rate schedule.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission is expected to decide on the agreement by mid-November, according to the company.
