Icon (ICLR) should benefit from a strong order backlog that supports growth in 2027, while questions about its underlying revenue trends and lower margins than peers remain the key concerns, RBC Capital Markets said in a note Monday.
The investment firm said the company's 2026 revenue guidance implied underlying organic revenue fell 5.7% in H1 and dropped about 12% in H2.
Meanwhile, Q3 guidance is the key event, as a raise that only covers higher pass-through revenue would not ease concerns about the core business, while a bigger raise would signal healthier billings and lift the stock, RBC said.
The stock's discount to peers reflects margins of about 17% versus more than 20% for rivals, but RBC expected margins to recover as direct fee revenue grows because that revenue carries higher profit gains on its fixed-cost base.
RBC rated Icon at outperform with a price target of $185, saying direct fee book-to-bill, or orders against revenue, has held at or above 1.2 times for three straight quarters and above every peer for the first time, which should support at least mid-single-digit growth in 2027.
