Vanda Pharmaceuticals trial of VQW-765 as a treatment for anxiety didn't meet its primary endpoint.

The Phase 3 trial's primary endpoint was the level of distress during the performance phase of the Trier Social Stress Test, a metric for social anxiety, in women, Vanda said Wednesday. Performance in the test was measured by the Subjective Units of Distress Scale, where participants rate their nervousness from 0 to 100.

Women who received the treatment didn't show a statistically significant difference from those who received the placebo, the company said.

The study also didn't meet its key secondary endpoint, which was measuring both men and women in the same test and by the same metric. The trial included 30 sites and 546 adults with social anxiety.

The study was designed to confirm the finding of Vanda's earlier Phase 2 trial, in which participants with a history of performance anxiety reported lower stress levels during the test than those who received a placebo.

VQW-765 is on hold pending further analysis of the full dataset, Vanda said.
