MDA Space (MDA) unit 49North said Thursday it has awarded a contract to TerraSense Analytics-led group Airborne Sensing Lab to back Canada's Remotely Piloted Aircraft System, or RPAS, project.

Airborne Sensing Lab will provide 49North with an airborne data-collection platform to capture imagery of ships over the Strait of Georgia, the company said, adding the imagery will back the development of the RPAS project's target-classification feature.

The contract award to the consortium is part of 49North's $78.2 million RPAS contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, the company said.

49North is part of a group comprising General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and other companies that is developing 11 CQ-9B Guardian aircraft for the Royal Canadian Air Force by 2028, the company said.
