TradingKey - Tesla Extends Pre-Market Decline as Roadster Launch Fails to Counter CPI Headwinds, Risking Another 15% Drop

On October 15 Eastern Time, a jump in US Treasury yields triggered by hotter-than-expected US September CPI data and broad de-leveraging in high-beta tech stocks sent Tesla (TSLA) shares down over 1% in pre-market trading today, touching a low of $260. Will Tesla's upcoming Roadster event be able to offset macro selling pressure and trigger a stock rebound?

As a multi-million-dollar supercar, the core value of the Roadster lies in showcasing Tesla's ultimate technology in powertrains, battery density, and aerospace-grade engineering. However, it cannot generate significant quarterly deliveries or revenue contributions for Tesla in the short term, making it difficult to directly allay market concerns over gross margins for mass-market Model 3 / Model Y models and the slowdown in global electric vehicle (EV) penetration.

The September CPI YoY growth rebounded to 3.7%, with energy and gasoline rising 9.1% MoM. Sticky inflation boosted Federal Reserve rate-hike expectations, and the jump in US Treasury yields directly suppressed valuations for high-beta tech leaders like Tesla that carry high forward price-to-earnings ratios (P/E 50x+).

Although the market holds out hope for a merger between Tesla and SpaceX (SPCX), and Barclays has proposed multiple potential deal structures and evaluated their feasibility, this remains an uncertain event, and a merger between the two tech giants would not necessarily benefit Tesla.

In short, while the Roadster launch event can boost brand sentiment, it can hardly reverse tightening macro liquidity on its own. Furthermore, amid fierce competition from legacy automakers and Chinese EV manufacturers, Tesla's global price cuts and subsidized financing policies continue to squeeze its automotive gross margins.

Amid relatively fragile fundamentals, Tesla's stock price is likely to trend downward with volatility. From a technical perspective, Tesla's next short-term support is at $340-$350, which was the low point of the September pullback. If it fails to hold this level, the stock risks further dropping to the $300 psychological barrier, representing about 15% additional downside from current levels.
