The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it wants to hear from a wide range of consumers and organizations about their experiences of mobile coverage, service quality and choice, according to a Thursday statement.
ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey said the regulator is aware of long-standing concerns about prices, service quality, coverage gaps, and limited provider choice in some parts of Australia, and wants to better understand these experiences, particularly in regional and remote areas.
The regulator is also seeking industry views on a range of competition, investment and regulatory issues relevant to the inquiry.
The ACCC said it has not formed a view on whether it should declare any wholesale mobile services, and it will gather evidence and consider the views of consumers, businesses, industry, community organizations and government stakeholders before making any decision.
Shares of TPG Telecom (ASX:TPG) and Telstra (ASX:TLS) each rose past 2% in recent Thursday trade.
