NTT Inc. is considering building a large-scale data center in Osaka Prefecture for Anthropic, sources said Tuesday. If realized, this would be the first data center in Japan for the U.S.-based AI development company.

With construction costs estimated at about 1 trillion yen, it may become one of the largest data centers in Japan. Data centers are critical infrastructure that handle AI data processing and other operations, and their construction is progressing in Japan in line with the rapid spread of AI.

Anthropic is developing AI that boasts world-class performance and is expected to be involved in cutting-edge AI development in Japan as well.

Anthropic cofounder Jack Clark met with Toshiharu Furukawa, Japan's digital transformation minister, in Tokyo on Tuesday to discuss issues such as AI development and infrastructure development. After the meeting, Furukawa told reporters, "The Japanese (government) would very much like to have an Anthropic data center here."
