Market Chatter: Mitsubishi Heavy to Restart Idled Shipbuilding Line in 2027 for Defense Vessel

MT Newswires Live10-19

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (TYO:7011) will bring a dormant shipbuilding line back into service in western Japan during fiscal 2027 to construct a new replenishment vessel for the Defense Ministry, Nikkei Asia reported on Monday.

The company will reactivate a roughly 250-meter slipway at the Tamano plant in Okayama Prefecture, operated by subsidiary Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems, the report said.

The facility was formerly owned by Mitsui E&S (TYO:7003) and was taken over by Mitsubishi Heavy in 2021 after Mitsui E&S withdrew from its struggling naval ship business, keeping the plant running, Nikkei said.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' request for comment.
