Foreign holdings of US Treasuries rose in August from the lowest level since October 2025, led by increases in the stockpiles of Canada and Belgium, Bloomberg reported Friday, citing Treasury Department data.
Overseas holdings climbed more than $83 billion from July to $9.33 trillion, Bloomberg reported. The data reflect valuation changes as well as net purchases and sales, and the Bloomberg US Treasury index advanced 0.3% in August, according to the report.
Japan, the biggest foreign holder, saw its holdings fall $36 billion to $1.1 trillion, the lowest since December 2024, the report said, adding that Mainland China's holdings also fell, while the UK's rose above $1 trillion for the first time.
Japanese officials were intervening in the foreign-exchange market over the summer to buy yen as the currency slumped to its weakest in four decades against the dollar, according to the report.
