AI Stocks Rebound. Chip Sector's Historic Losing Streak is Set to Snap.

Dow Jones18:28

The chip sector's worst losing streak in more than 20 years could finally snap Monday.

Tech stocks were rebounding to start the week after a brutal selloff got really ugly on Friday. It's probably too early to say that the fears over artificial-intelligence debt no longer exist-or even eased. But the selling has at least come to a halt ahead of the open of trading Monday in favor of some dip-buying.

Intel was among the best performers in premarket trading, rising around 4%, while data-center plays Bloom Energy, Marvell Technology, and Applied Optoelectronics were rising by a similar amount. Advanced Micro Devices, Micron and Nvidia also were up as chip stocks mounted a comeback.

The iShares Semiconductor ETF has fallen for nine days, its worst run since May 2006, but the ETF was pointing 2.6% higher in premarket trading Monday.

"Things are looking a lot cheerier than they were at the close on Friday. After yet another lurch lower for tech, buyers have once again appeared," said IG analyst Chris Beauchamp. "Last week looks more like a healthy rotation than the beginning of something more dramatic," he added.

CoreWeave also was rising, around 1%, which will come as a relief to the broader market. The cloud computing company was at the center of the panic as its stock plunged 12% Friday-and 25% for the week after its corporate bonds sold off.

The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.1% Friday and closed the week down 4.5%, its worst week since June. The technology-heavy index is still up 2.7% in October and more than 12% this year.
