Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry is considering giving 250 billion yen in additional funding to Rapidus Corp., which is aiming to mass-produce next-generation semiconductors, ministry officials said Monday. If this plan for fiscal 2028 and 2029 is implemented, the government's total investment in Rapidus will rise to 650 billion yen.

The plan was presented at a subpanel meeting of the Fiscal System Council, an advisory body to the finance minister, on Monday.

The government has already invested 250 billion yen, and 150 billion yen in additional funding was included in the industry ministry's initial budget request for fiscal 2027. In its plan, the ministry said it is hoping for additional investments of 150 billion yen in fiscal 2028 and 100 billion yen in fiscal 2029 as part of a long-term strategy.

Rapidus aims to begin mass production of 2-nanometer semiconductors at its production base in Chitose, Hokkaido, starting in fiscal 2027. The company plans to secure 2 trillion yen in loans from major banks and elsewhere to expand its production lines and for other purposes. To get loans from the private sector, the company needs to have a certain amount of its own capital.
